- Discuss names in the novel: What do their names say about them? How does each character’s name formulate your opinion of him/her? How does the author’s word choice affect the novel? How could the novel be changed if different names were used? Can you think of some other names that either explicitly or implicitly characterize a person or place?
- Characterization & Figurative Language Chart in groups. Can groups also find any symbols in the novel?

- Freewrite: “Melinda proves to the male ‘jocks’ that she can rival their talent in basketball. By making a series of free-throws, her actions speak for her. List other instances in which Melinda or other characters speak without talking. (David Petrakis, the Art Teacher, art in general…)
- Have students break into 5 groups. Each group will work up an argument for one the following positions: All immigrants should be allowed, we should completely ban immigration, only people who are considered to be in “good standing” should be allowed, only people with relatives in America should be allowed, and only people looking for blue-collar jobs should be allowed. (10 minutes)
- Each group elects a speaker to defend the group’s point. The speaker will then read their group’s argument.
- Class takes a vote to see what group developed the best argument.
